Einen Weg gibt es nicht. Denn ein Weg ist nie einer. Ein Weg impliziert immer schon ein Woher und ein Wohin, ein Vorher und ein Nachher, die Möglichkeiten der Umkehr, der Irre und des Fehlgehens. Figuren wie die Wegkreuzung und die Weggabelung gehören unaufhebbar zur Grammatik des Weges. Vor allem aber lässt sich ein folgenschwerer Unterschied zwischen einem Weg als vorgegebene materielle Bahnung und als Vollzug einer Bewegung feststellen. Diese Alternative scheint eine Unterscheidung nahezulegen, die zwei grundlegende Arten der Wegerfahrung beschreibt, wie sie bereits in der Antike gefunden werden können: Auf der einen Seite steht Ödipus, der an der Wegkreuzung seinen Vater erschlägt, auf der anderen Odysseus, der, getrieben vom Zorn des Poseidon, von einem Gestade ans nächste verschlagen wird. Ödipus bewegt sich in einem Raum gebahnter Wege, ihrer Überkreuzungen und Verzweigungen, während Odysseus auf der glatten Fläche der See seine "spurlosen Bahnen" zieht...

There is no path. For a path is never one. A path always already implies a where from and a where to, a before and an after, the possibilities of turning around, getting lost or going astray. Figures such as the crossroads and the fork in the road are ineluctably part of the grammar of the path. Most importantly, however, there is a difference between the path as a given material track or groove and as the process of motion. This alternative appears to suggest a distinction that describes two fundamental alternatives in the experience of a path which can be found already in the classical era: on the one hand Oedipus, who slays his father on the crossroads, on the other hand Ulysses, who, driven by the wrath of Poseidon, drifts from one island to another. Oedipus errs in a space of grooved paths, of their crossings and bifurcations, whereas Ulysses channels his "trackless trajectories" on the level surface of the sea….
